I'M REACHING FOR THE LIFE WITHIN ME HOW CAN ONE MAN STOP HIS ENDING

A lot had changed for Carson Walker since he had left his father’s home. Carson had started out rough, aggressive, hostile, and didn’t give two shits about what anyone thought. Even though some of that still remained intact, a number of factors were responsible for the dulling down of those traits. The first factor to come along was Kholden Jackson. Upon first meeting Kholden Carson had pushed and pulled every which way. He was sure that he had done terrible things that should have driven Kholden away. The fact that Kholden stayed around and forced him to accept that there was at least one person who gave a damn about him. The second, probably most important, factor was little Rylee Paige Walker. Carson never knew an accident could be so important to him. It hadn’t been his plan to get Sarah pregnant. Five years ago Sarah had promised him that they would be one of those forever kinds of couples. Carson believed her from the start, which was probably his biggest mistake. He often thought about how Sarah had been adamant about telling him that everything was going to be okay and that she was there for him no matter what. Apparently no one could break them apart.
Carson had to find out the hard way that she was lying about everything. As soon as Carson attempted to address Sarah in public she blew him off, making fun of him to her friends. In attempt to gain some dignity, Carson cut her off. Sarah seemed to be in mutual agreement until she ended up knocking on his door to tell him that she was pregnant. Change was set in motion after that. Carson just never realized how drastic the change was until he looked into the big brown eyes of his five year old daughter. Every morning it was the same. Carson would watch Rylee giggle and play and he often wondered how the hell he managed to produce a human being who was as pure and innocent as Rylee. It wasn’t easy for Carson to admit that Rylee belonged to him. She was too perfect. Still, Carson remembered going through the paternity tests and other various things that only proved more that he was her father. The DNA match had come back as nearly 97% which was too high to even consider the possibility that he might not be. It was a little disconcerting at first, but with a little help Carson managed to fall into his role as a father relatively quickly. After Sarah disappeared Carson needed that guidance anymore. Taking care of Rylee full-time had never been what he planned.
Rylee woke up before him, which was never a good thing for Carson. He could hear her shuffling about on the bed that used to be his. Since there were only two beds in the room, Carson shared with Kholden so that Rylee didn’t have to sleep with him every night. He wanted her to have her own space. Carson pretended to be asleep still as he heard Rylee get up and walk a few steps. He knew that she was probably standing right next to him. A minute went by before Carson felt a gentle poke to his shoulder. He waited a minute longer and the rate of the poking increased. Carson waited with his eyes closed until he heard Rylee say, Daddy, we don’t got all day! He could hear how tired her voice sounded, but he knew that the five year old wasn’t willing to wait until she was more awake. Carson finally opened his eyes, his colder brown eyes falling on his daughter’s warmer ones. He reached over pulling her from the floor so that she could straddle his abdomen. Rylee leaned forward, her small hands pressing into Carson’s chest. Okay, okay, Daddy’s up. He said with a small ghost of a smile. Rylee giggled as Carson poked Rylee in the side. Carson glanced over to the empty side of the bed. Kholden must have gone out for something.
Carson moved Rylee to the empty side of the bed before he sat up, pushing the covers down. He hated when Kholden left before he could get a shower. Leaving a five year old in a room unattended would not be smart at all. Getting dressed was always a chore as well. He managed to get Rylee bathed and clothed in what seemed like record time. Carson had her busy with a bowl of cereal as he dressed himself. Even though Carson hated cologne of any kind he splashed some on anyway just because he had been unable to take a shower. Rylee, Carson said after he was fully dressed. What do you want to do today? He watched Rylee’s face scrunch up in thought. That was a habit she had to have gotten from him. I wanna go to the payrownd. She replied excitedly. There were still a few words that gave Rylee some problems. Playground was one of them. Carson had to fight the urge to laugh. He didn’t want Rylee to think that he would be laughing at her. She already seemed more insecure than she needed to be. Carson didn’t want to egg that on.
After Rylee finished off her cereal Carson picked her up, holding her on his hip as he reached for a napkin to wipe off some of the milk she still had around her mouth. Rylee turned her head, trying to avoid it, but eventually Carson won out, finally wiping the napkin around her pouty lips. The walk to the park thankfully wasn’t a long one. He watched her run off to the playground. Rylee was a little anti-social when it came to playing with other kids. She would occasionally break out of her shell, but only if she were urged to. Carson shook his head, drawing in a deep breath as he sat on a nearby bench.
